How to measure the body for clothing

Use consistent body landmarks for chest, waist, hips and height.

  1. Use a flexible tape over light clothing or underwear. Keep it level and snug without compressing the body.
  2. Chest or bust: measure around the fullest part while breathing normally.
  3. Natural waist: measure the narrowest torso point or the natural crease when bending sideways.
  4. Hips: measure around the fullest seat area with feet together.
  5. Record body measurements separately from garment measurements; designers add ease according to cut and style.
